Plotting in ANSYS Mechanical

Plotting is a part of any project, because plots are essential to communicate your analysis set-up and results to others. In this article, we'll look at how to increase image quality and how to efficiently produce plots.

First, remember that if you're using Windows 7 or Vista, you'll need to disable the Windows Aero Option in order to work with Images and Animations at all. Just right-click on the desktop, select "Personalize" and select one of the "Basic" themes.

The "Image to file" button is the most basic way of getting a figure out of your result, other than using PrintScreen. This option will make a .png picture of your graphics window and in many cases, this will give you the figure you're after.

However, sometimes it’s necessary to increase the image resolution, to plot a complex geometry or a dense mesh, for instance. The Print Preview tab, right underneath the graphics window, is a quick way to increase the resolution for just one or a few pictures.

After the Print Preview has been generated, increase the resolution to "Enhanced" or "High". The updated picture can be saved simply by right-clicking on it.

If you need to extract many figures, the Report feature can be used to save all of them directly to a specific folder. First, add “Figures” by marking the relevant item in the Tree outline and use insert Figure. The “Figure” is a 3D picture, meaning that you can zoom and rotate your model, and the view will be saved in the Figure. It’s also possible to add several Figures with various views for the same result item.

To save all your Figures to a folder, first click on the Report Preview tab. When the report has been generated, use the "Publish" button and select "Page, Figures in Subfolder" in the window that pops up. Here, you also select the folder where you want to store your pictures.

By default, the figures in the report will be 600*400 pixel images. You can change the graphics height and width, as well as the Graphics Resolution, in the Mechanical Window, under Tools>Options>Mechanical>Report>Figure Dimensions.

Finally, remember that you can change the background color by going to the Project page, Tools>Options>Appearance>Graphics style. Back in the Mechanical window, you can use the “View” menu to show or hide the ruler, triad, annotations and so on. This could make your plots more readable and intuitive. Happy plotting!
